Water purifiers remove undesirable chemicals, particles and microbes from water through filtration, biological and chemical processes, and radiation treatments with ultraviolet light (UV). Now you might be wondering what is alkaline water? Where does it fit into all the different types of water?
Alkaline Water Ionizers
There are many methods used to purify water. One of the newest crazes is drinking alkaline water. The oldest is boiling water to kill pathogens. Water is also filtered through cotton, or other porous materials to remove solids. This can reduce the numbers of larger microbes, but is ineffective against viruses, chemicals and very small molecules.
Commercially manufactured water purification systems use several methods to make water cleaner. Some use carbon filters that work on the principle of adsorption. Activated carbon filters are one of the most commonly used methods of water purification. These types use molecular attraction to remove water impurities, and can remove very small molecules. These filters are sometimes enhanced with silver nanoparticles that are very effective anti-bacterial units, and also decompose some chemicals such as pesticides, rendering them into harmless organic compounds.
Distillation is currently the most efficient method of water purification available. Although it cannot purify water to 100%, it can create water that is 99% pure. Water is boiled, creating steam. The steam is then passed through a cooler atmosphere, causing it to condense back into liquid. Heavier particles are not carried with the steam, and stay behind.
Water Ionizers – Alkaline Water
The drawback is that distillation is expensive, and not suited for large-scale water treatment. Alkaline water is basically water that is more alkalized than acidic. This means that the pH level of the water is above the 7.0-7.2 range. But there are actually several ways to get alkalized water. The simplest but not always the easiest is to drink natural spring water.
Another way is to drink structured water by a device that can restructure water and rebalance water. And one of the most common ways but certainly not the most natural is to drink ionized alkaline water created by a water ionizer. A water ionizer separates water into alkaline and acid fractions using a process known as electrolysis.
The least common method is Reverse Osmosis. This process forces water, under pressure, through semi-permeable membranes. All molecules larger than the pores in the membrane are trapped. Since there are few molecules smaller than a water molecule, this method is very effective at removing most contaminants, because membrane materials can be selected with pores almost as small as water molecules.
The down side is that the most effective water purification methods also demineralize the water as well. This is not a good thing. The human body is not designed to use pure water, and actually depends on the minerals present in most water for proper body functions.
Alkaline water is the best option
Demineralized water can cause deficiencies in calcium, potassium, magnesium, and lowered electrolytes, causing many health problems. The World Health Organization has stated that demineralized water leaches lead, and other neurotoxins from pipes, and has caused lead poisoning in children.
Manufacturers of home distillers would have you believe the exact opposite. They say that minerals in the water are the cause of disease and health problems. The World Health Organization has warned that these claims are completely false.
Animal studies have shown that, although water is not the main source of mineral intake, in a process not completely understood at this time, animals given distilled water had significantly lower levels of vital minerals in their blood serum, than animals given normal drinking water, even though they were fed the same food.
